Brain Bulletin #8 - Twenty More Brain Foods

in Brain Bulletin

This headline recently in USA Today - "Alzheimer's Cases Expected to Rise At a More Rapid Rate!"

Sixteen million Americans are expected to be hit with this brain disease by year 2050. The article goes on to say that this increase has the potential to collapse the health care system. Scary stuff. To quote a previous Brain Bulletin - "If you brain goes what's left?"

What is causing all this!? The correct answer is "nobody knows". Neuroscientists do seem to be looking very closely at the foods we eat. Here are 20 more foods that science says are extraordinarily good for your healthy brain. The ORAC (anti-oxidant capacity per 100 grams) is listed after each:

  1. cherries - 670
  2. kiwifruit - 602
  3. baked beans - 503
  4. pink grapefruit - 483
  5. kidney beans - 460
  6. onion - 449
  7. white grapes - 446
  8. corn - 402
  9. eggplant - 386
  10. cauliflower - 377
  11. frozen peas - 364
  12. potatoes - 313
  13. sweet potatoes - 313
  14. red cabbage - 298
  15. leaf lettuce - 262
  16. cantaloupe - 252
  17. banana - 221
  18. apple - 218
  19. tofu - 213
  20. carrots - 207

You are what you eat. Why not eat with your brain in mind? Every bite counts. Try to include some of these foods in your regular diet. Your brain will thank you.

Remember though, one single prune has an ORAC of 5770! (See Brain Bulletin 2.)

In the next Brain Bulletin I will tell you about an interesting bit of brain research that found that you can improve your memory by 25%! Instantly.
