Brain Bulletin 116 - What the Happiest People on Earth Eat
Yes, there really are "happy meals". Food can lift your mood.
Hippocrates once said, "Let food be your medicine." He was right. Small changes in diet might just be the fastest way to a happier brain. We are quite literally what we eat, and it turns out we can eat our way into a better mood.
I spent a few hours combing through my extensive library of "brain books" searching for foods that have been linked to happiness. Here is a list:
anchovies
artichokes
avocado
bananas
beans
beef
beets
black beans
blueberries
bok choy
broccoli
chamomile tea
chia seeds
chocolate - dark
coconut oil
coffee
eggs
flax seeds
garlic
ginger
grapes
green tea
halibut
kale
kefir
kiwis
lemons
lentils
mangos
mushrooms
nuts
oranges
pomegranate
pumpkin seeds
quinoa
red pepper
salmon
sardines
sauerkraut
strawberries
Swiss chard
turnip greens
yogurt
..... and there are more of course.
It's worth noting that in 2008, UCLA researchers reviewed 160 studies about how food affects the brain and determined that a balanced diet along this exercise can diminish anxiety.
Diet fads come and go. Stressful events come and go. One constant that remains is to eat healthy, nutrient-rich foods.
Why not pick one food from the list above and include in your diet today? And then a different one tomorrow.
Remember, every bite counts.
