Brain Bulletin 127 - The Surprisingly Easy Way to Fix "Dumbth"
There is a curious relationship between mind and feet.
Some days, in spite of all my efforts, I just can't seem to get my brain going ....
Said differently: I am in a state of "dumbth".
There is a quick, dependable fix.
William Wordsworth said, "Methinks that the moment my legs begin to move my thoughts begin to flow."
When facing a problem, whether "dumbth", or something more specific, I don't "sleep on it". I "walk on it" instead. Distractions disappear, thoughts come together, mental clarity blossoms ..... doubly so if I'm in nature. I always do my best thinking while walking.
Because walking doesn't usually require a lot conscious effort, our attention is free to wander—to merge the world before us with stored images in our brains creating the perfect brain state for creativity and innovation. Again, especially true in a green space.
A "walkitation" is an all-day gift to our brains. Movement is medicine for body and brain. In addition to fixing "dumbth", consider :
- less stress
- more happy hormones
- grows a bigger, smarter brain
- reduces inflammation
- stronger heart
- improved lung function
- facilitates digestion
- eases arthritis
- reduces type II diabetes
- promotes new connection between brain cells
- increased hippocampus volume (memory)
- stronger brain signal transmission
- reduces effect of weight producing genes
- boosts immune function
- improved sleep
- better mood
Walking is " .... the closest thing we have to a wonder drug," Dr. Thomas Frieden, former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
