Brain Bulletin 130 - How I Improved My Sleep in Seconds

Sleep is vital to good health.

A decent night's sleep can make a positive impact on your entire day!
Joseph Cossman once noted, "The best bridge between hope and despair is often a good night's sleep."

Since we don't always sleep well, here's something easy to try:

I read lavender calms the nervous system, and helps sleep. So, I got a bottle of essential lavender oil. A couple of sniffs at bedtime,  and I left the bottle open on the bedside table. Remarkable! I had the best sleep. Two years on, and I'm still doing this. I even travel with it when I'm on the road doing presentations.

Lavender has been extensively studied1 for its benefits on sleep, brain health, and well-being. Consider this:

  • Improved sleep quality: Studies have shown that inhaling lavender essential oil can increase deep sleep, and reduce insomnia. It has a calming effect on the nervous system, promoting relaxation.
  • Reduced anxiety and stress: Lavender has been found to decrease anxiety and stress levels by reducing cortisol levels. This can have a positive impact on your brain health, as chronic stress can lead to cognitive decline and mood disorders.
  • Increased alpha brain waves: Lavender has been shown to increase alpha brain waves, which are associated with relaxation, calmness, and a sense of well-being. This can also help to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.
  • Enhanced cognitive function: Some studies suggest that lavender may improve cognitive function, including memory, attention, and processing speed. which can improve focus and concentration. So important these days.
  • Neuroprotective effects: Lavender has been found to have neuroprotective properties, which may help to protect the brain against age-related cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

I've noticed I'm a different person when I sleep well. How about you?
